Shane began his career at Spazio Lighting in November 2022 as an Internal Sales Consultant. Within six months, he moved into a Technical role, supporting lighting and solar solutions. After another year and having already begun his studies, he moved into External Sales. Most recently, he was promoted to Cape Town, where he now serves as a Technical Sales Representative.

Despite already working in the field, Shane was motivated to deepen his understanding and obtain formal training in lighting calculations and design principles.

“Throughout my career, I have always aimed to excel in my field,” he notes, emphasising the importance of technical knowledge in distinguishing oneself as a lighting professional.

The course introduced Shane to a broad range of core concepts, some challenging and others profoundly enlightening. He found mastering lighting control and communication protocols such as DALI, DMX, Casambi, and KNX particularly demanding, given his limited prior exposure.

However, topics including human centric lighting, the transition between scotopic and photopic vision, and a nuanced understanding of the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) significantly deepened his grasp of effective lighting design.

“These concepts fundamentally changed the way I evaluate and specify lighting solutions,” Shane reflects.

Practical experience was a cornerstone of the curriculum. Shane carried out manual calculations and computer based simulations using tools such as Relux, working on projects ranging from fuel stations and offices to train stations and government buildings.

One memorable assignment involved designing lighting for a train station using technical documentation in an unfamiliar language, which compelled him to rely on measurement tools and spatial analysis. This experience strengthened both his software proficiency and problem solving skills.

The programme also transformed Shane’s approach to real world projects. He now views lighting as essential to occupant wellbeing, safety, and architectural enhancement. By focusing on compliance, energy efficiency, and visual comfort, he creates solutions that balance technical requirements with aesthetics.

He explains that decorative and accent lighting play a crucial role in shaping mood and user experience, but must be integrated with high efficacy solutions and advanced control systems to ensure energy efficiency.

Emerging trends such as wireless controls, building automation, and human centric lighting are reshaping the industry. Shane remains committed to continuous learning, drawing on BHA’s alumni network, technical discussions, and industry events to stay abreast of new developments.

For aspiring lighting professionals, Shane’s advice is clear: formal education is demanding yet rewarding, equipping graduates with the comprehensive skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving field. His journey underscores the value of dedication, hands on learning, and lifelong professional development in illumination engineering.
