BHA School of Lighting was created by Philip Hammond, MD and founder of leading Illumination Engineering practice, BHA Lighting Design & Consulting. Philip is considered an authority on lighting practises and LED lighting technology in South Africa and across the world.
Expertise & Experience: A qualified professional illumination engineer, Philip was trained by Thorn EMI Lighting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd in 1976 and 1977 through London Southbank University (UK) and graduated Cum Laude as B Illum Eng. With over 48 years industry experience, he is a regular contributor to lighting and energy related publications.
Leadership Role: Philip is a member of the Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA). In the past he served as the IESSA Chairman for the Cape Town branch for two years, and prior to that he held the portfolio of Development & Training. Philip is also a member of The Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP, United Kingdom) and an Educator member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD, USA).
Empowering Development: In 2012 Philip developed a series of LED Lighting Technology and Applications Workshops which were accredited by the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) and Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA), a voluntary institution of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Well over 150 successful workshops have been presented throughout South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. The accreditation entitles attendees to claim Continued Professional Development (CPD) credits.

Meet the Educator – Daniel Hammond
Expertise & Experience: Daniel is a highly proficient lighting designer & illumination engineer with 11 years of experience in the lighting industry. He has a demonstrated history & proven track record working on various small to large scale commercial projects in the architecture & planning industry at BHA Lighting Design & Consulting, where he has specialised in architectural, interior, industrial & landscape lighting design projects.
Daniel attained an Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering from BHA School of Lighting, where he mastered in lighting design tools and skills, 3D renders and lighting systems.
His clients would say he is a true perfectionist, whereby he applies his fundamental lighting design approach and thorough knowledge of building standards & regulations on all his projects, whether it be a commercial project, where an artistic approach is required, or an industrial project, where lighting is required only to serve a specific purpose.
Educator Role: As well as being an illumination engineer, Daniel is also an educator at BHA School of Lighting, where he provides mentorship to the first year students of the Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering e-learning course, who live all around the world.
Additionally to this he is a Relux Lighting Design Software expert, and he provides mentorship & tuition sessions to students who have enrolled on the Relux Desktop Lighting Design Software course.
