04 Feb BHA School of Lighting joins the “Glare Patrol Challenge” panel discussion – February 2025 Newsletter
Following the success of the Glare Patrol Challenge, a global initiative aiming to raise awareness about glare, The Lighting Police hosted an enlightening panel discussion to explore the widespread yet often underestimated issue of glare caused by artificial light.
Over several weeks, participants observed, documented, and shared instances of glare in their environments, resulting in 16 submissions from around the world. The Lighting Police advisory board members selected 5 cases out of the 16, offering actionable solutions and advices during the panel discussion on creating “healthier, safer and more comfortable spaces” through better lighting practices.
Moderated by Katia Kolovea, this global conversation featured expert insights from the esteemed advisory board:
- James Poore, JPLD (UK): Practical solutions for glare in hospitality and retail lighting.
- Lara Elbaz, Elbazgildemontes (Spain): Real-world applications and the importance of balancing light intensity and contrast.
- Dr. Shelley James, Age of Light Innovations (UK): The science of glare’s impact on vision, psychology, and aging eyes.
- Ximena Muñoz, Luxia Lighting (Chile): Managing glare in outdoor environments and project-specific strategies.
- Philip Hammond, BHA School of Lighting & BHA Lighting Design (South Africa): Educating future designers on the significance of glare management.
Highlights:
1. Learn how glare affects our daily lives and well-being.
2. Discover practical strategies to eliminate glare in various lighting applications.
3. Hear real-life case studies and solutions from global lighting experts.

The Principal’s Pen
One month down and eleven to go before the start of the next year, said very much with tongue in cheek. But time does fly!
Recently it was wonderful and much appreciated to read feedback from a student about the Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering Course content and the support that we render to our students. Here is a reprint of that post to LinkedIn by Shadi Abdelsalam from Riyadh, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia:
“Celebrating My First Year in Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve successfully completed the first year of the BHASL003C19: Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering (C2019) at BHA School of Lighting!
This past year has been an incredible journey of learning and growth. The course, regarded as the premier e-learning lighting course in Southern Africa and globally, has provided me with a solid foundation in illumination engineering.
This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support and guidance of my instructors Philip Hammond and Daniel Hammond. Their dedication and expertise have been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges of this rigorous program. Thank you for your encouragement and for being such an integral part of my learning journey.
As I step into the second year, I’m both excited and motivated to dive deeper into the advanced modules. My goal is to gain even more knowledge and skills that will empower me to excel in the global built environment industry. I look forward to tackling the challenges ahead, completing my final examinations, and earning this prestigious qualification.
Here’s to another year of learning, growth, and lighting up the path to success.”
We provide the same level of support and mentoring to every student. It is our innermost desire that every student should succeed and graduate. Of course, as the saying goes, it takes two to tango. In other words, the students must do their part as well by being diligent, determined and self-disciplined to keep to their personal study plans whilst keeping their eyes fixed on the final prize, an internationally recognized and accepted qualification.
As you will remember, I have addressed AI in the real world and the impact it is and is going to have on lighting products, lighting design and lighting design software and as expected, a myriad of companies and organisations are also talking about AI.
I recently attended an international webinar on AI in lighting and the future of lighting with AI. I had great expectation, but whilst AI was broadly addressed, not much was really said about anything of substance, about AI in lighting. It was revealed that AI had in fact prepared the content for the webinar. Ai had accumulated data on some topics and had produced some interesting information and results, but that was it.
Coming up this month on 20 February, I will present a webinar entitled “The Future of Lighting is Bright: Modern Lighting Opportunities Unveiled”. AI will be among the other interesting topics that will be presented. We look forward to seeing you there. For more details and to book your place read on.
With best regards
Philip Hammond
