09 Sep Illuminate your curiosity – September 2024 Newsletter
The Principal’s Pen
Recently, I was researching lighting technologies, particularly those that now embrace artificial intelligence (AI). I pondered on how many others including our students have even given a fleeting thought to this subject. This highlighted the importance of continuing to remain curious. This is even more important in one’s specialist area of expertise. It is only by being curious that we can advance and stay at the top of our game.
If one is recognized and acknowledged as a bit of an expert within a professional community, it is then even more important to continuously do your own research to increase your knowledge.
Today, we are spoilt. Before the internet, we had to keep up to date with print magazines and spend hours in public libraries to do research. Even then we would be hard pressed to find information about newly developed technologies. Now, we have the internet, I hasten to add, used with caution, to access so much content. I said with caution, because there is so much poor-quality information, poorly written content and unproven, untested content on the internet. It is not always easy to identify poor content. It takes knowledge and understanding to recognize the so-called lemons in the basket of information. I call them lemons, because after spending time reading the information only to then realize that it is poor quality or perhaps completely inaccurate or completely incorrect, it leaves a sour taste in one’s mouth.
I encourage every reader of this newsletter, whether you are a BHA School of Lighting student or not, to read, research and hunger to learn more. If you are a professional in the lighting field, you have a duty to your clients and customers to deliver the best and highest level of advice based on the latest lighting and control technologies that are available.
Now for some course news. Last month we informed you about some important changes that will ensure that the Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering course maintains its position as the leading e-learning lighting course in the world and the most up to date with all technological advances in the lighting and lighting control arena. Those changes come into effect during September before we head to Spain for a month to visit our sons, their wives and our 2-month old grandson, Louie Hammond Gonzalez in Madrid.
We wish all students, both First and Second Year students well, as they prepare for the final examinations for their respective years. It is an exciting time for the students and equally exciting for us especially when they graduate.
I will have more to flow from my pen next month to give you more interesting reading. Until then, as always, have a fantastic business month.
With best regards.
Philip Hammond
