02 Feb Full steam ahead for BHA School of Lighting – February 2023 Newsletter
The Principal´s Pen
Welcome to the February 2023 edition of the BHA School of Lighting newsletter.
Our courses continue to be selected by prospective students from around the world. International students consider the cost of courses to be unbelievably great value. Similar courses with very little of the new technologies being taught, cost a couple of hundred thousand Rand once the currency conversion has been done from Euros or US Dollars to ZAR.
The recent launch of our own proprietary RELUX Desktop course manuals and exercise sets, has attracted much interest from South African prospective students, lighting companies and international students. Lighting companies are becoming much more aware of the need to train their staff to the highest levels of proficiency and competence in the use of the amazing RELUX Desktop software suite to be able to produce a high standard of lighting design that will be fully compliant with the applicable standards to minimize the risk of non-compliance and the possible consequences.
I am running full steam ahead with my major project. The project is to revise every manual for each module in the Advanced Diploma in Illumination Engineering course. That means there are 28 manuals to revise and update. We are extremely proud to provide our students with the most up to date content that is academically correct and accurate. During the revision and updating process, grammar and spelling is carefully checked. I write the manuals in an easy to follow conversation style to stimulate students to keep to their personal Study Plans which Daniel monitors on a regular basis. To date since starting this mammoth project on 23 January 2023, the first four module manuals have been revised and have been uploaded onto our system, replacing the previous modules.
Recently, I have been asked the question: “When are you thinking about retiring?”
Well, the answer is very simple: “Not for a long time”. The reasons for that are:
a. I enjoy working in the lighting design environment immensely.
b. I absolutely so enjoy educating passionate students and helping them to become qualified professional illumination engineers after graduating.
c. I really enjoy presenting webinars on lighting and related subjects to share what I have learnt through personal experience over 53 years in the field pf lighting, through what I have learnt through personal
study and research, something that I continue to do to this day.
d. Probably an extremely important consideration, that I would drive my amazing wife scatty if I sat at home all day doing nothing.
e. The most important point, I would drive myself insane if I had nothing to do. It would probably bring about my end quickly. My mind would stall!
So, as you will have read above, I still have at least another 10 years to go!
You have all heard that expression: “Many is the good tune that is still played on a Stradivarius”.
Be sure to lookout for more information about our next webinar on 23 February 2023 – “Episode 2/23: Lighting Design: Extra, Extra – learn all about it! Down to the real nitty gritty”. Do you know about the certificates that you are supposed to issue on completion of the various steps within the lighting design process through to the final Certificate of Conformity that only a qualified Illumination Engineer ma issue and sign? Register for this webinar to hear more about the process.
I wish you all great business and good health.
With best regards
Philip Hammond
