Lighting Matters: What is your approach to lighting in the current SA reality? – Monthly Column featured in EE Publishers’ Vector Magazine

I was recently prompted to address the current reality for my students when I reviewed their progress. I observed that some students had fallen behind with their studies. When I spoke to some of them one-to-one, I realised that they were being bombarded with negative thoughts and some were under intense pressure from their employers due to the poor business climate in South Africa.

It is distressing to hear such negativity, most of it based on the negative things we hear about every, both in South Africa and elsewhere. I also experience this when I visit professionals but I steer the conversation in a positive direction.

It takes no skill to be negative; there is an endless supply of material. But the truth is, if you allow yourself to be distracted by negative news, it will dictate your thoughts and actions and “pull you down”.

There is so much that is positive in our country. It’s time to make sure that you grab your share. So, stay focused; your destiny is in your hands. Don’t let the negatives rob you of your opportunities.

Statistics show that 68 professionals and skilled individuals and two high net-worth individuals leave South Africa every day. This creates an opportunity for those of us who remain.

We can make a difference. We must remain positive but without ignoring the current reality. We must harness some of our reality and turn it to our advantage. We have a responsibility to ourselves, our families and employers to be productive and ethical and to do everything with integrity.

If I may make a suggestion, consider finding a business coach or business strategic planning specialist to help take a fresh look at your business and perhaps the way that you do business.

I hope that this has helped you, that it perhaps just caused you to think afresh.
